  • Advertising on a Shoestring Budget

    by: Glenn Haertlein
The best way to make money with your website, no matter what the business, is to get it noticed. To get it noticed, you need to advertise. But how do you do that when you’re on a shoestring budget that’s so tight you really can’t afford the shoestring, let alone the shoe you took it off of? Well, there are three things you can do that won’t cost you a dime. And you can get started with them today.

First, get yourself signed up for several hits-for-clicks sites. For those of you who don’t know what I’m talking about, a ‘hits-for-clicks’ site is a site from which you surf the net and get points for viewing websites. In return for surfing, you get points. You use those points to get exposure for your site(s). Most hits-for-clicks have free signups and most will let you enter up to three (sometimes five) URLs into their system. Here are some hits-for-clicks sites I use:

    Fontoon (http://www.fontoon.com/?refid=3446)
    StartXchange (http://www.startxchange.com/index.php?referrer=htack210)
    TrafficG (http://trafficg.com/index.php?member=htack210)
    Profit Charger hits (http://profitchargerhits.com/www.profitchargerhits.com/?refid=10717)
    Traffic Pods (http://www.trafficpods.com/index.jsp?ref=htack210)
    MyTrafficStorm (http://www.mytrafficstorm.com/?ref=385)
    Traffic Swarm (http://www.trafficswarm.com/go.cgi?329064)
    SurfMaster Club (http://www.webideas4u.com/team/htack210/smcp1.shtml)

Second, you need to get yourself a good browser that allows you to do tabbed browsing. What’s a tabbed browser? I’m glad you asked! A tabbed browser, simply put, is a browser that lets you browse several sites at once using tabs instead of separate windows. To get the most out hits-for-clicks sites you need to surf from the hits-for-clicks site’s start page. The more you surf, the more points you get. The more points you get, the more exposure you get. You could surf from each one of your hits-for-clicks sites one at a time, but you’ll make better headway surfing from as many of them as you can at once. Now imagine how cumbersome it would be to have each of the above sites open in a separate window! Having each site open in a separate tab in the same browser window is much more convenient because then you can move from tab to tab and surf several sites at once.

“What are some good tabbed browsers?” you ask. Well, one that comes immediately to mind is Netscape 7.x. It has tabbed browsing built in. All you do is open one site, hit CTRL+T (on the PC) or COMMAND+T (on the Apple), open another tab, open another site, and so on and so on. Then, all you need to do is tab between the sites all in the same window. Another tabbed web browser that comes to mind is CrazyBrowser available at crazybrowser.com (where else?). Crazy Browser works in much the same way as Netscape 7.x and allows you to open whole groups at once. So, if you organize your hits-for-clicks sites in one folder under Crazy Browser, you can opt to open all the links at once and Crazy Broswer will open each one in a separate tab.

Okay, so now you’re surfing! You’re gaining points and building exposure for your site. That’s great! But guess what? It’s still not enough. There’s one more thing you need to do in order to get the most bang for your click.

Third, you need to build your hits-for-clicks downlines in order to get more points for your clicks. Hits-for-clicks sites thrive on getting more people to sign on. It’s how they make their living. One way they do this is through referrals. As an incentive for their current customers to get them more customers, hits-for-clicks sites often give extra points for referrals. “How am I supposed to do that,” you ask, “when I’m already clicking my fingers to the bone?” That’s where free rotators come in.

A rotator is a web device that let’s you put several URLs in one place. The rotator then takes those URLs and rotates them. In other words, when the user happens upon your rotator address, he or she will see one of several sites you have entered. Let me illustrate. Let’s say I have a free web rotator that I signed up for at pageswirl. I log in and I put in several sites:
    http://gman.167aday.com
    http://solutions.juvio210.com
    http://www.juvio210.com
    http://pageswirl.com/?aff=htack210

When the user goes to my rotator site, he or she will see one of these sites. They will come up at random and I can weight the sites. In other words, I can cause one site to be seen more often than the others.

“Okay. So how does that help me?” you ask. With a free rotator, you can input the referral links for your hits-for-clicks sites along with the main site you’re using to promote your business. Enter the free rotator URL into your hits-for-clicks sites. Make sure that your particular hits-for-clicks allows the use of rotators. Many do. Some do not. And some only accept rotators from certain providers. (For example, Profit Charger Hits only accepts Pageswirl rotators.) With the free rotator installed, you’re getting referrals, building your clicks-for-hits downline, gaining more browsing points, and getting more exposure for your site. And what’s nice about all of this is that you don’t have to pay a dime!

When it comes right down to it, the sites that advertise the most, get the most hits and have the potential to make the most money. And with hits-for-clicks sites even people with little or no advertising budget can get the word out. So why are you still here? Get out there and start surfing!

Advertising Revenue – Making Money With Adsense

Advertising revenue and Google Adsense go hand-in-hand.

The Internet has regained a lot of credibility since its fall from grace at the end of the 90s.

This means more businesses are spending more money to get customers via the Internet. And its possible for you to cash in on those millions of dollars.

Google has an advertising program, involving four parties:
    1.Google
2.Customers paying for the ads through the Adwords program
3.Visitors clicking on the ads on search engine results pages and websites
4.Website owners running the ads on their websites through the Adsense program. These are the people making money from ad revenue.

For an example, look no further than the page you are on at the moment. Notice down the right hand side of the page and also in the top left of this article there are groups of Ads by Google (if cant see them its because either you are not in the US or not reading this article on my website).

Google has developed technology that automatically senses what the theme of the page is and then displays ads that are suited to the theme. This way the visitor will see advertisements likely to be of interest.

The Adwords customer (the advertiser trying to sell a product or service etc using these ads) is billed every time a visitor clicks. The amount depends on the cost of the ad, which is basically determined by advertising demand.

Revenue from that billing is split between Google and the owner of the website where the visitor clicked. If the ad costs the advertiser 50 cents per click, Google gets 25 cents and the website owner running the ads gets 25 cents.

If you were to click one of the Adsense ads you see on this page Id get 50%.

Google Adsense is not the only program you can use to place ads on your site. Companies like Searchfeed offer similar programs but Adsense is where the money is.

There are a few key elements to successfully earning revenue from Google Adsense:
Create website pages to rank well in the search engines. No visitors =no clicks=no revenue
Strategically position your Adsense ads to attract the most clicks.
Target keywords that have a high click price, thereby earning more per click.
Make sure the words you target have enough searches per month to be worth the effort of creating a webpage.
Make your site a valuable resource so visitors return.

    Some more advanced strategies include:
Create a valuable newsletter that visitors want to receive. Publish each issue on a webpage with Adsense and notify subscribers by mail with a link to the page (this method also minimizes risk of your email being filtered).
Target less competitive keywords for your search engine rankings but direct the traffic (legitimately) to pages with more competitive keywords because the Adsense ads will pay more per click.
When choosing Adsense ad design (you can choose color and format) avoid designs that are obviously ads. The less they look like ads the better.

I recently read a book about Adsense, written by a guy called Joel Comm, that has increased my revenue by 34%. Ive heard from many other marketers with similar stories.

Through testing and tracking he was able to increase his earnings from $30 per day to $500 per day. His Adsense revenue for January 2005 was $17,463.75!!

    Impressed?

Joel has compiled his tips and strategies for making money with Adsense into a book called Adsense Secrets(http://www.oo7workfromhome.com/recommended/adsense-secrets.htm). A highly recommended read if you are interested in this form of money making.

Next time we will be taking a closer look at building an eBay business. Ebay has created more work at home businesses than anything else in human history, Ill show you how to get a piece of the action.

Until next time, remember persistence pays off BIG TIME.

  • Advertising Sucks! Long Live The Web!

    by: Mike Cheney
How much does an advert in Yellow Pages cost? How many enquiries would you expect to get back for that investment each day? 1? 10? 100?

What about an ad in the local newspaper or a trade publication? They don’t come cheap. When was the last time you heard an advertising salesman say:

“If you’re not happy with the volume of responses and sales you get from the ad I will give you your money back.”

How many times have you heard an ad salesman say:

“I will tell you exactly how many people view your advertisement, how long they read it for and which ad they were looking at before they starting reading your ad. You can use this to work out the profile of your potential customers.”

Hardly likely is it? Yet this is the kind of information that you can get your hands on via your website.

Expensive is a dirty word. Nothing is about cost – everything is about value. Having a great profile on the web can not only bring you more customers and sales but it can boost the perceived size and stature of your company.

As a business owner of course you want to see your website at the top of the search engines – everyone wants to be higher than their competitors – what value would you put on this?

Imagine placing an ad in a magazine and asking the salesperson:

“Can you guarantee me more sales? Will you give me my money back if people read the ad but don’t buy my product?”

It just wouldn’t happen. And yet there is a lot of scepticism surrounding the web – I come across it every single day.

“Mike, we’ve had our fingers burned in the past and though I like what you’re saying how do I know you’re not one of the cowboys?”

Ultimately nobody will ever buy anything from anybody unless buyer confidence is establsihed – no matter what is being sold. And the only way to establish buyer confidence is to develop a lasting relationship built on trust, two-way communication and transparency of information.

I don’t believe that website marketing is, or should be, a black art. I don’t believe that copywriting or accounting are black arts. They are all just things that, if you want done right, you need to get the professionals in to do.

  • Advertising the Kanoodle Way

    by: Lawrence Roth
Another great tool for advertising is http://www.kanoodle.com. At Kanoodle.com you can sign up and get $5 free towards you advertising cost. You can then request for Kanoodle to review your submission and create a list for you with the keywords that best describe your website. This process will use up your $5 credit but is well worth it. This is an easy way to get a list of keywords to put in your Meta tags and use for pay-per-click advertising.

Also with Kanoodle like Google Adwords and Overture the site does have a Keyword suggestion box so once you get your list of keywords generated by Kanoodle you can use their suggestion box to estimate the amount of clicks you might receive.

Kanoodle also has a feature where you can advertise heavier on some days and lighter on other days. Generally, Monday through Thursday are the best days to do the heavier advertising because there are more people online during those days. So with Kanoodle you can advertise heavier on Monday through Thursday and lighter on Saturday through Sunday.

Kanoodle also has the basic reporting features like Google Adwords and Overture. It does appear to be a good tool and I have found it useful to supplement advertising that I do with Google Adwords and Overture. However, the one thing that I have found most helpful from Kanoodle is using the $5 credit towards receiving a list of keywords. This is a great start for those who are starting advertising on the Internet but are not too sure about where to start and do not know what keywords to use for their site.

  • Advertising Using PPC Search Engines

    by: Paul Jesse
    Copyright 2005 Paul Jesse

Internet technology offers vast opportunities to promote your business with virtually no advertising borders, and you can find countless sources online directing you towards budget marketing via pay-per-click search engines for maximum effectiveness in the information age.

Enterprising people know all the benefits of optimizing their online advertising, and because of this fact the pay-per-click (PPC) technique has been developed to meet the need. PPC is certainly at the cutting edge of Internet advertising today, because you bid or budget on the exact amount you want to put into your advertising campaign, giving you the choice to state just how much youll pay each time someone clicks on your ad.

For instance, if you bid five cents a click, thats how little youll pay for your advertising – and youll only have to pay that five cents each time a consumer clicks on your ad! Budget marketing via pay-per-click search engines should encompass the following integral steps of creating, optimizing and managing your advertising campaign or sponsored search on the most widely used search engines including Google, Yahoo, MSN, Earthlink, American Online, Ask Jeeves and CNN.com – just to name a famous few!

The most widely touted benefit of budget marketing via pay-per-click search engines is that it delivers your product information and your web site to the very consumers online who are searching for such products, be it business, science or technology-related, trips and travel, car buying, entertainment ideas or wedding planning! Your business specifically reaches those already interested in knowing more, and enthusiasts of budget marketing via pay-per-click search engines will tell you that no other advertising medium can give you that kind of bang for your advertising buck.

Other pluses of budgeting via PPC are that your ad can be targeted to regions you specify, whether you want the entire world to know, or just focus on your local area at the moment. Your ad can also be tracked towards search engines that receive the highest amount of keywords specific to the product or service on your website. Whether you have a home based business or youve just been appointed Director of a countrywide multi-national, your business will benefit from budget marketing via pay-per-click search engines. • Advertising Your Home Business on a Budget

    by: Stone Evans
When you are starting out in a new home business and no one
knows who you are, one of the greatest challenges you will face
is how to drum up new business.

If there were not people in your community or marketplace that
you knew who needed your products or services, you probably
would not have started your business to begin with. But, once
you have talked to those who you personally knew who needed your
what you offer, then your next task is to find others who will
    help keep your doors open.

Many people know that they must turn to advertising at some
point in the future, but they hope that day will be long down
the road. For some, this utopian concept will come to fruition.
But for the rest of us in the real world, we must come up with
creative solutions for meeting our home business advertising
needs while working within our budget.

Most people have a misconception about having to spend lots of
money in order to advertise their home business. When you start
out, you honestly will not have much money available for
advertising, and if you do, you should still spend it wisely.

Before you jump headfirst into the world of advertising, let me
share some of the lessons I have learned concerning this most
    important topic.

    LESSON #1

It does not have to cost an arm and a leg to advertise your home
business, unless you fail to plan and fail to test.

As much as is possible, you should always test your advertising.
If you jump in and start dumping tons of money in to advertising
without first testing your advertising, you might find yourself
broke and without sales at the end of the road. Most people who
commit this error write off their failure on the home business
they chose or the economy or any of a hundred other excuses.
But, if they are unwilling to take responsibility for their
mistake, they will never learn from their mistake. Don’t let
    this be you.

    LESSON #2

All testing should be done in blocks. If you begin to advertise
simultaneously in newspapers, radio and television, how will you
know which advertising is bringing people to your cash register?
You won’t. All you will know that something might be working,
but you will not know what is actually doing the trick.

Even if you tell people in your advertising to tell you how they
found you, my experience shows that fewer than 10% of the people
ever will tell you anything — and those people who do may not
even get the facts straight! You cannot rely on your customers
to tell you what advertising is working for your home business.
You must put in the extra effort to know for yourself.

    LESSON #3

Only when you have a proven and solid advertising portfolio
should you venture to drop big bucks in an advertising campaign.
Even then, you should be careful to keep further measurements to
determine how much the maximum advantage of an ad would be.
Sometimes you might be able to reach ten times as many people,
but depending on the kind of media and other factors, the
additional exposure will only generate twice as many sales. Keep
your eye attuned to situations like this to get the most from
    your advertising dollars.

    LESSON #4

As Lesson #3 illustrates, sometimes your best advertising
investment may actually cost you less money. When you are first
starting out, whether you are running a home business or a
business outside of your home, you need to be able to get people
talking and thinking about your business.

If you are busy testing ads in media’s such as the newspaper,
magazines, radio, and television, you need to learn ways of
promoting your business that do not require large cash
    expenditures. A few examples are:

     Word of Mouth
     Business Cards
     Press Releases
Non-Primetime Ads on Radio and Television

Here is more information about each type of low-cost advertising:

    WORD OF MOUTH

This of course is the cheapest kind of advertising on the planet
    — it does not cost you anything. Ask your customers if they
know anyone who could also use your products or services. When
they are happy with your offerings and service, they will be
willing to tell you whom you can contact, and they will pass the
    word for you.

    BUSINESS CARDS

You can usually pick up 500 business cards for about $20. When
you do, hand them out. Do not give more than a couple of cards
to each person. If they need more cards from you, they will ask.

Some people are known to network with others on a regular basis.
Some of these people are also known to be always looking for an
extra few bucks. With these people, you can suggest to them that
if they write their name on the back of one of your business
cards and the card is presented to you, then you will pay a
referral fee to them. You do not have to offer much —
sometimes one dollar is enough. Look at your home business and
your offerings and decide how much would be a good referral fee.

    PRESS RELEASES

Press Releases are a good source for generating news about your
home business. The business editor at your local newspaper is
always on the lookout for a good business story to fill the
business news section of the newspaper.

Of course, the business editor understands the economics of
running a paper and is more inclined to run your story if you
buy advertising in his/her publication, but will still print
stories for special events and openings.

The important thing to remember about Press Releases is that it
must be constructed in the form of a news story. Even if you are
a sole proprietorship, quotes from you should be written in a
third person format: John Doe said, “Your quote here.”

A Press Release should pack the most important information at
the beginning of the copy, and leave extra details towards the
    end.

You should always provide the reporter who gets the task a
simple and easy way for him/her to contact you directly. Often
the reporter will want to contact you to get details that will
enhance their take on your story.

To learn more about creating Press Releases, you may check out
    Rusty Cawley’s site: http://www.PRrainmaker.com/

NON-PRIMETIME ADS ON RADIO AND TELEVISION

Believe it or not, some of the best rates for radio and
television are on the overnight and non-primetime venues. These
target times are not a total waste as they can easily keep the
    infomercial people in business.

These off-hours are just less populated than the primetime hours.

Don’t be afraid to check your local radio and television rates
for non-primetime hours to see what bargains may exist. With
television, primetime is 7pm to 10pm. With radio, primetime is
8am to 5pm. This sure leaves a whole lot of hours available to
advertise your home business at discount rates!

    IN CONCLUSION

When it comes down to it, there is a lot to understand about
advertising, but when you have the basic knowledge down pat,
everything will fall into place and bring more dollars to your
    bank account.

  • Advertising Your Home Business With Pay Per Click Can Be Risky

    by: Kirk Bannerman
An unfortunate byproduct of the pay per click advertising
business is click fraud. Many people with an online business
spend large amounts of money on pay per click advertising only to
discover that many of the people clicking on their ads weren’t
really interested in their products or services.

Bogus “visitors” to a pay per click ad represent click fraud.
This is a serious scam that threatens the viability of the pay
per click advertising business which has become enormously
profitable for all of the major search engine operators, namely
    Google, Yahoo/Overture, and MSN.

Click fraud has different twists, but the end result is generally
the same. Advertisers are billed for fruitless traffic
generated by someone who repeatedly clicks on an advertiser’s ad
without any intention of ever buying anything.

The search engine advertising market is currently about $3.8
billion per year and estimates vary widely on how much click
fraud is actually going on. Clearly, the search engine operators
would like to downplay the extent of this problem. Some industry
experts claim that a little click fraud exists but that it is
overblown by advertiser paranoia, while others estimate that ten
to twenty percent of all clicks are false (made by someone with
no legitimate interest in the ad itself).

Virtually everyone involved with pay per click advertising sees
click fraud and knows it’s there, but no one is quite sure what
    to do about it.

Both Google and Yahoo/Overture acknowledge that the click fraud
problem exists, but claim improved internal controls will prevent
the problem from escalating. Their stated position seems to be
that they are concerned about click fraud, but that it is not a
material issue so far. Both of them are touting their increasing
internal actions aimed at detecting and combating click fraud.

Such reassurances from search engine companies certainly aren’t
surprising, given how much they stand to lose if advertisers
cut back on advertising spending. The stakes are huge and the
search engine companies are actively involved in public relations
campaigns. Industry research firm eMarketer expects $7.4 billion
to be spent on search engine advertising by 2008, up from only
    $108.5 million back in 2000.

The incentives for click fraud have increased along with the
money devoted to search engine advertising. Advertising on search
engines has turned into a fast-spreading craze as more and more
marketers have realized substantially higher returns on search
engine ads than on more traditional marketing campaigns conducted
    through print media.

Most pay per click advertisers set a spending limit and once the
spending limit is reached, the ads cease to appear in the search
results. Click fraud is a very unethical competitive tactic
where someone repeatedly clicks on a competitor’s ad until the
spending limit is reached and the ad then disappears from the
search results. It seems that it’s only a matter of time before
some advertisers become so exasperated with click fraud that they
file a class-action lawsuit against a major search engine.

The success of search engine advertising has substantially
raised prices that advertisers pay for top spots. Unfortunately,
these higher prices have turned click fraud into a dark little
industry of its own. Some crooks have hired cheap overseas
contractors to just sit in front of computers and constantly
click on targeted ads and others are developing sophisticated
software to help automate and conceal click fraud.

If you use pay per click advertising it would be wise to
carefully monitor your traffic to determine if you are the victim
of click fraud. In any event, it’s probably safe to say that
pay per click advertisers are going to have to accept a certain
level of click fraud as just a cost of doing business.

  • Advertising Your Work From Home Internet Business With PPC S

    by: Tom Worsley
If you want to make money online with a work from home business then you are going to need lots of good targeted traffic to your web site and or affiliate links. One way to get good targeted traffic is to pay for it. I know you were hoping to do this business of yours without spending a dime right? Well if thats what you are thinking you better keep working for someone else and forget about working from home with your own internet business.

I have been paying for traffic ever since I started my online business over 4 years ago and one of the best sources of targeted traffic is through pay per click search engines (PPC) or pay for placement search alternatives like Google adwords or Yahoo Sponsor Listings, formerly Overture.com .

Google adwords and Yahoo Sponsor Listings are the kings of pay per placement search engines. They are also the most expensive but you will get the most targeted traffic from them. If you cannot get a free listing in the top 10 on their main search results under the sponsored listings then you may want to consider pay per placement. Sponsored listings usually appear at the top above regular listings on Yahoo, and down the right side of the page at Google.

If Google and Yahoo are too rich for your liking then try some of the smaller PPC search engines like 7Search, Findwhat and or Kanoodle. I have put together a web page with links to these PPC search engines at the following web page.

The key to good PPC advertising is to find cheap key words under .50 cents per click that will land you in the top 5 positions. There is no need to be number 1. A number 5 placement may cost you a few cents per click less and you will likely get the same traffic or in some cases even more than a number 1 spot. Try to pick as many key words as you can that are directly related to your product or service.

If you are advertising a work from home internet business try breaking down what I just typed. Work from home, home internet business, internet business, work from home business, home business. YOU GET THE PICTURE.

If you want to advertise a product like multivitamins try keywords like vitamins, supplements, vitamin supplements, health supplements, diet supplements, multivitamins. YOU GET THE PICTURE.

If you dont have your own web site and only an affiliate link you may have to get a redirect URL from someone like http://tinyurl.com . Most of the PPC engines will not allow you to use an affiliate link. But you can get a tinyurl for free and have it re-direct to your affiliate link. If your affiliate program allows you to key code for testing purposes like SFI does then you can get several tinyurls and direct them to a different key code. That way you can actually test your PPC ad campaign to see which key words are working the best for you. This is important if you want to reduce your advertising dollars without sacrificing traffic to your web site. (We all want to do this right?)

PPC is only one advertising method that you should be taking advantage of, but its an important one so give it a try if you have not already. It may just change the way you do business and effect how much money you make with your work from home internet business.

  • Affiliate Strategies Of Pay Per Click Advertising Networks

    by: Stan Hauser
The Untold Secret Of Pay Per Click Advertising:

An often misunderstood reality of Pay-Per-Click advertising is that many times you can’t determine where you ad will be displayed once you sign-up with one of the PPC Search Engines. In the incestuous world of online advertising, companies are often simultaneously competitors and partners. This is never more true than in the case of Search Engine Advertising.

Even The Big Guys Do It:

If the Pay-Per-Click program you’re using is from one of the major brands that has it’s own consumer search destination site (Google, Yahoo, Lycos etc,) it’s a little easier to tell where your ads will show up. However, even if you’re working with the major players, your ads won’t be limited to the Search Engine you signed up with. For example, Google has agreements with Lycos, Ask Jeeves, AOL, and other lesser known brands, to display ads from the Google AdWords program. Yahoo has relationships with MSN, and CNN.Com to display ads from its Overture Pay Per Click Program. Lycos owns HotBot.Com and has partnered with affiliates outside its network to increase the distribution of ads from the Lycos AdBuyer Pay Per Click program.

Distribution Strategies Of Smaller Search Engines:

Once you go beyond the major Pay Per Click Advertising programs it becomes increasingly difficult to know where your ads will appear. Most of the second tier Search Engines rely exclusively on networks of unknown sites for their distribution. FindWhat.Com, Kanoodle, Enhance and Search 123 don’t operate sites that consumers use to search the web. Because of this they have developed relationships with thousands of smaller sites to display ads from customers who sign up for their Pay Per Click programs.

    Affiliate Traffic Isn’t Necessarily Bad:

Just because a Pay Per Click Advertising program doesn’t have its own search site to drive traffic doesn’t necessarily mean that the traffic is of lesser quality. Like everything else when it comes to a successful PPC Advertising campaign, the key is to track and analyze results on a daily basis. Set-up independent tracking URL’s for each PPC Search Engine you are working with, or use a third party tracking tool like Atlas One Point to track how many clicks you’re getting from each Search Engine, and how much of the traffic is converting into sales.

    Can You Cherry Pick Affiliates?

As a rule, most Search Engines won’t divulge the list of affiliates they are working with to display your ads. Even if you are able to determine which affiliate sites are converting better for you than others, the Search Engines generally won’t allow you to cherry pick which affiliates will display your ad. However, some Pay Per Click Search Engines like Google allow you to opt out of their affiliate network.

    Conclusion:

Driving traffic by displaying ads across a network of affiliate sites is a fact of life for Pay Per Click Search Engines. It’s not necessarily bad, but it is something you need to be aware of as you analyze which PPC Search Engines to use, and which ones perform. By displaying your ad on affiliate sites your marketing message is put in front of more people who are looking for the products you sell. The downside is once you move beyond the big brands and venture into the vast mysterious world of affiliate networks, there is a chance the quality of your traffic will decline. As long as you monitor your traffic sources for volume, and conversions, and adjust your campaigns accordingly you should be able to benefit from the increased distribution affiliates provide, while maintaining the profitability metrics for your Pay Per Click Advertising campaign.

  • Advertising “Click Fraud” Rampant Online?

    by: Jim Edwards

    -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-

“Pay-per-click,” by far the most popular form of online advertising, recently came under fire as charges of rampant “click fraud” gather steam on the Web.

Google and Yahoo! earn the majority of their money through sales of advertising to tens-of-thousands of online merchants, companies, and professional.

In fact, some estimate that 99% of all Google’s revenue comes from advertising sales. Unfortunately, allegations of click fraud may well rain on Google’s otherwise sunny parade and cause a whole scale revamping of current online advertising practices.

Pay-per-click advertising does exactly what it sounds: advertisers pay for each click on their ad, usually mixed in among search engine results or displayed on relevant websites.

“Click fraud” occurs when, for whatever reason, an ad gets clicked by someone or something (usually an automated “bot” that simulates clicks) with no intention of ever buying anything from the advertiser.

The sole intention of click fraud is to simply drain an advertiser’s budget and leave them with nothing to show but an empty wallet.

    Who commits click fraud?

Usually an unscrupulous competitor who wants to break a rival’s bank, online “vandals” who get their kicks causing other people grief, or search engine advertising affiliates who want to earn fat commissions by racking up piles of bogus clicks.

Regardless of who does it or why, click fraud appears to be a growing problem search engines hope stays under their advertising clients’ radar.

This problem isn’t exactly news to the search engine giants.

In fact, on page 60 of their 3rd quarter Report for 2004, Google admits that they have “regularly refunded revenue” to advertisers that was “attributed to click-through fraud.”

Google further states that if they don’t find a way to deal with this problem “these types of fraudulent activities could hurt our brand.”

Bottom line for Google and Yahoo! (which owns Overture, the Web’s largest pay-per-click search engine): as word of click fraud spreads across the Web, they must act quickly to calm the nerves of advertisers who could well abandon them over doubts about the veracity of their advertising charges.

The search engines all claim to carry measures that identify and detect click fraud, but details about how they do it and to what extent remain sketchy.

They claim revealing details about security would compromise their efforts and give the perpetrators a leg up on circumventing their defenses.

This sounds good, but affords little comfort to advertisers who feel caught between losing out on their best traffic sources and paying for advertising that won’t result in revenue.

One way to protect your business against click fraud is to closely monitor your website statistics.

Look for an unusually high number or regular pattern of clicks from the same IP address.

If you need help, enlist the aid of your hosting provider to aid you in spotting suspicious trends in your website traffic.

Also, a number of services such as ClickSentinel.com have sprung up online to help advertisers spot and quickly analyze and compile the data necessary to effectively dispute fraudulent click charges with the search engines.
